This sneaker marks the second collaboration between Ewing Athletics and Latin music icon Yandel. Drawing inspiration from Yandel’s birthplace of Cayey, Puerto Rico, the color story pays homage to the town’s iconic twin peaks, Las Tetas de Cayey. The project debuted a brand-new silhouette—the SL33 low-top, which I conceptualized and created—marking the brand’s first entirely new sneaker since the early 1990s and designed to introduce the Ewing brand to a younger, fresher audience.

Design Notes:

This collaboration closed the chapter on our partnership, bringing the story to its conclusion through the comic. I wanted to tell the story of Cayey through a mountainous lens, reflected in the upper’s mix of materials—beige leather and mesh, brown suede, green leather, and reflective paneling inspired by the town’s landscape.

To extend the hiking influence, I helped develop a custom lace lock that allows the sneakers to be worn without tying, and designed a custom mountain logo for the tongue that incorporates Yandel’s “Y,” representing Cayey’s iconic twin peaks.

As with the first release, the packaging features a Spanish-language Ewing comic that I wrote, continuing the narrative and bringing the story full circle. Each pair also includes a custom Ewing x Yandel straw bag I developed to celebrate Yandel’s Latin roots and cultural heritage.

Together, the two releases demonstrated how culturally grounded storytelling can celebrate Latin identity while expanding the relevance of a retro basketball brand with a younger, more diverse audience.
